"German opposes discriminatory school transport policy"4.12.46pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 21st Jul 2006 Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Leader Mike German has spoken out against the school transport policy of Torfaen Local Authority. The move will put an end to free transport for pupils whose faith does not correspond with that of their school. He sees the policy as "unnecessary, ill-considered, discriminatory and potentially divisive". "The key issue is why this policy was put in place. Labour's Education leader in Torfaen has clearly stated that there is no financial motive behind the move. Any savings made will be offset by the fact that Torfaen is prepared to provide free transport to appropriate faith schools in Cardiff at a much higher cost. I cannot see logic in the thinking of Torfaen council. The policy is without discernible reason." He went on to comment on the discriminatory nature of the move. "By forcing a £10 a week burden on those affected, they are blatantly contravening the right and ability of children to attend local faith schools. This essentially amounts to discrimination, which is totally unacceptable." "Despite the feelings of injustice expressed, the council has continued to ignore the protests of local campaigners, including parents, teachers, clergy and governors. I believe that any legal action pursued by these groups would be perfectly justified." "The Labour Cabinet in Torfaen must fully explain why they have chosen to take this divisive action."
